A top-of-the-table clash saw TJ’s 3XV make the away trip to Medway, full of optimism and confidence… What followed was 80 minutes of courage, chaos, and one extremely unnecessary People’s Elbow.
From the first whistle, Medway asserted dominance by repeatedly handing the ball to men who looked like they’d been grown in a lab specifically to ruin Saturdays. TJ’s responded by tackling everything that moved, including some things that probably didn’t need tackling.
By halftime:
• TJ’s had made roughly 1,000 tackles
• Medway had made roughly none
• TJ’s had two head injuries
• The scoreboard read 24–0
• The physio was considering asking for overtime pay
TJ’s simply couldn’t cope with Medway’s big ball carriers, who ran straight, hard, and with the emotional warmth of a wrecking ball.
The halftime team talk was believed to consist mainly of heavy breathing and the phrase “just keep going, lads, we don't do giving up”
Second Half – The Comeback Nobody Asked For (But Everyone Loved)
With scrums now uncontested, largely to preserve what remained of TJ’s forward pack, the second half became an entirely different spectacle.
TJ’s came out firing, showing outrageous heart, grit, and a total disregard for personal safety. Somehow, against all logic and several laws of medicine, they clawed their way back to 27–17 after 60 minutes.
A golden chance appeared to make it a three-point game, but rugby once again reminded TJ’s that hope is dangerous. Missed opportunity. Sighs. Deep, collective sighs.
Naturally, more injuries followed, because TJ’s players apparently had loyalty cards at the treatment table. Medway sensibly took advantage and crossed again to settle things.
In the moment everyone will pretend didn’t happen, Jones heroically stopped Medway’s biggest ball carrier in the corner. Unfortunately, while being held in an arm bar, Jones stood up and delivered a People’s Elbow straight out of WrestleMania.
The referee, unimpressed by this sudden code-switch to professional wrestling, immediately binned him for what was generously described as “disgraceful behaviour.”
Full Time Score
Medway 34 – 17 TJ’s
A proper game of two halves. One dominated by Medway, the other dominated by TJ’s refusal to accept reality.
Man of the Match: Stennulat
Playing 40 minutes with no groin and before rumours spread, not little Stenners, which will come as a great relief to absolutely everyone.
Dick of the Day: Jones
For remembering every rule of rugby except the one about not elbow-dropping people.
TJ’s 3XV face Maidstone at home in another top-of-the-table clash. Players will be reassembled, ice baths will be filled, and Jones has been gently reminded that rugby is not scripted entertainment.
Same time next week. Bring your boots. And maybe a stretcher.
