Lloyd Hat Trick Despite Storm Amy

Lloyd Hat Trick Despite Storm Amy

Adam Hookway5 Oct 2025 - 08:38

TJs added a third victory from five rounds of N1 rugby on Saturday after seeing off both Birmingham & Moseley and Storm Any's efforts to disrupt

TJs were back at The Slade and with the strong winds at their backs for the first half as they looked to blow away Birmingham & Moseley with a fast and furious attacking game. There were plenty of moments to excite the home crowd, not least a Connor Lloyd hat trick, but still too many errors at the set piece to be entirely happy.
It was actually Birmingham who struck first with a try within 10 minutes after TJs had given away territory and ball to allow their opponents to get near the try line and score. But they hit back immediately as Lloyd spotted a gap on the fringes of the breakdown and accelerated through and over to put TJs in front with his conversion 7-5.
Twenty uneventful minutes later Lloyd struck again and his pace was simply too much for Birmingham to handle albeit very much wind-assisted. And as the half edged to a close TJs were relieved to see Lloyd and Curtis Barnes combining down the left for Barnes to cross after a delightful dummy inside and Lloyd again converted to send TJs in 21-5 in front
The second half was going to need careful game management and TJs got off to the best of starts as Lloyd added his third and TJs try bonus point was secured along with a strong 26-5 lead.
Birmingham were though still a threat and their back three were dangerous with ball in hand but TJs did well to keep the ball for periods and away from the threats out wide. Birmingham had plenty of power up front but the TJ defence remained solid although injuries to another pair of TJ centres will be a worry.
Birmingham did secure a second try on 52 minutes and a third a few minutes later to close to 26-17 but TJs always seemed to have control of the clock and scoreboard and the win was sealed with a flowing move down the left that found Lewis Gjaltema racing clear to add a fifth try and secure TJs a maximum points win
TJs remain in seventh in National 1 and their next three games are against three of the top four sides with Blackheath away next before returning to The Slade for the visit of Plymouth Albion on the 18th October
