Report by : Stefan Knight - Lead Coach U10s
Our U10s—and most of our Minis age groups—wrapped up the season with an exciting trip to Minehead for the Tigers Challenge at Butlins, one of the UK’s biggest Minis rugby festivals. With teams coming from all corners of the country, it was a fantastic opportunity for our players to test themselves, grow, and celebrate a great season together.
After an energetic Friday evening exploring Butlins’ many attractions, Saturday morning saw us fuel up and head to Minehead FC for the first day of competition. Both our teams—the Tornadoes and the Jets—faced strong, unfamiliar opponents and rose to the challenge with determination and team spirit.
Tornadoes scored impressive wins against Tondu RFC, Ealing Trailfinders, and Wolverhampton RFC, with a narrow loss to Oldfield. Their efforts earned them the top spot in their group and a place in one of the top-tier groups for Day 2. Jets secured victories over Leicester Forest RFC, Caerau Ely RFC, and Windsor RFC, and despite a tough match against Ledbury RFC, they finished second in their group—another strong showing that placed them in a competitive tier for Sunday.
Day 2 brought fresh challenges. Tornadoes beat Huntingdon, drew with Oakham RFC, and lost to Senghenydd RFC, finishing 3rd in their group. Jets drew with Sutton Coldfield RFC and came up short against Amersham and Huntingdon, finishing 4th in theirs. It was a tough but rewarding day, showing how far both teams have come this season.
What stood out most across the weekend was the resilience, teamwork, and sportsmanship on display. Players supported each other on and off the pitch, stepping up with subs and encouragement when injuries or fatigue hit. The atmosphere was full of positive energy and mutual respect, and the players should be genuinely proud—not just of their results, but of how they conducted themselves as individuals and as a team.
Off the field, the tour was just as successful. It was fantastic to see players, parents, and coaches connecting, having fun, and making memories—from Butlins arcades and evening entertainment to plenty of laughter and bonding time. These are the moments that define a great rugby tour.
Thank you to all the coaches for their dedication and support, the parents for your enthusiasm (and outstanding cops and robbers costumes), and the players—for giving it your all and making the weekend truly special. Well done, everyone
