Community Rugby - start delayed for new season

Adam Hookway

Levels 5 and below set for a delayed start to their season as heatwave and drought take their wider toll on pitches and more

The Rugby Football Union has delayed the start of the community rugby season because of concerns about player welfare and pitch conditions affecting much of England.

By community rugby they are referring to Level 5 and below and as such this will affect our Senior Men and Women and Junior age groups as well.
The National 1 (Level 3) squad won't be directly affected but player safety and more remains a priority as always

Many grounds are now deemed unsuitable for safe full-contact activity and no lengthy spells of rain are currently forecast before the scheduled start of the English community season on Saturday, 5 September.

After gathering feedback from representatives across different regions and discussing the options, the RFU has pushed the start back to the week commencing Monday, 21 September.

All levels below National League i.e. Level 5 and below will be subject to the delayed season start i.e. week commencing September 21st. So, this means no senior rugby matches outside of the 1XV before 26th September.

National Leagues, have ruled that the 1st XV will play as per the fixture list. So, no fixture changes for the TJs N1 squad.

Whilst we have the flexibility of using Vizards as an alternative we will have to be mindful of limited availability for all. And if matches are to be played at Vizards the opposition will have to agree as for some they may have had no contact training to prepare them for the rigours of competitive rugby - both sides must be in agreement to play as a result

For more details specific to your age group, TJs senior and Academy squads and more please speak to the age group lead, manager and coaches for more details re training and playing between the start of the season and 21st September as appropriate
