Tjs had made a thrilling start to their National 1 season with narrow wins over newbies Sheffield and London Scottish. Cambridge were a third newbie having come down from The Champ last season and they were looking to end their losing run at The Slade.
It looked very much like that might come true for them as they found the normally strong Tj defence lacking in the first half as they ran in six tries to Tjs two within the first half hour.
Jack Walsh and Matthew Engelbrecht scored early for TJs and it took two close range efforts from Alfie Scopes and Will Holling to keep Tjs in the fight just before the break.
Tjs turned hopeful defence into pacey attack from the second half whistle as Tom Mannix, Matthew Engelbrecht and Connor Lloyd all sped over within 10 minutes to put Tjs in front.
Cambridge hit back to level things up at 45-45 but a Jack Walsh try converted by Lloyd plus a penalty to boot edged Tjs 53-45 in front with 5 minutes left.
A last minute penalty for Cambridge who by then were looking for a losing bonus point hit the upright and bounced out. They regathered to score a converted try and the game ended 53-52 in Tjs favour
Elsewhere Plymouth beat Sheffield 47-5 and Sale FC, who Tjs travel to face next Saturday, beat Bury St Edmunds 15-45 to join Tjs at the top of the table
Birmingham & Moseley edged out Dings 35-31 and Leeds Tykes romped to a 57-10 win over London Scottish. Rams slipped to a 31-34 defeat at home to Bishop's Stortford and Camborne won 26-40 away at Rosslyn Park after Park had taken a 21-0 lead after half an hour.
In National 2 East Oundle, Guernsey and Old Albanians maintained their own winning starts to the season with victories over Havant, Henley and Westcombe Park respectively
On Sunday the U13s were in action with the Vikings and Warriors travelling to Old Elthamians. The Vikings drew 25-25 with OEs As and the Warriors ran out comfortable 10-55 winners against OEs Bs. Well done all
