News and Events

4th April 2020

Dear TJ

First and foremost I hope all of you, your families and loved ones are safe in this current COVID-19 disrupted world. Working and Schooling from home is certainly driving a new and interesting world for us all.

Thank you to those members who have been asking how the club is positioned during this crisis. A few of us have been working hard behind the scenes to look at the club's financial situation and in turn modelling some scenarios based on the world returning to some normality.

Actions taken by the management team include 50% pay reductions for staff, cancellations of subscriptions for services not required whilst closed, stopped all cash depletive purchases. Alongside this we have additionally started to look at next season based on reduced sponsorship income based on tough economic conditions that lie ahead. During the next week the management committee will be reviewing all the scenarios and in turn I will feedback to the membership our findings and decisions. Please do not be concerned of the club’s viability, as per my message in The Courier we are in a secure position.

Lastly as you will have heard by now our 1XV has been promoted to National 1, level 3 of the Rugby pyramid which is a HUGE achievement by everyone at club. This journey started some 10 years ago as we were relegated to level 8 and frankly heading down a road to oblivion. Back then as our Minis and Juniors moved towards 14/15 years of age we lost them to more ambitious clubs. Today we have a pathway through our Mini section, through Juniors into the Academy now into a 1st XV playing in National 1.  A mouthwatering local derby against Blackheath beckons!!  Add to this our Women's section having a successful season too and the Pink Ladies finishing top in WNC2SE(S) and with numbers growing, there is rugby available for all and we will all be hoping to go again in September all being well..

I will be in touch again in the coming weeks to keep you all abreast of what is happening at The Slade.

Yours in Rugby

Darren Grasby

Chairman TJRFC

As Darren mentioned TJs have been promoted to National 1 as runners up to Taunton Titans in the final National 2 South standings as decided by the RFU

Head Coach Pete Danks penned the following message

Eleven seasons ago Ben Smith and I met with Darren Grasby to discuss taking up coaching at TJs RFC. The club had just been relegated to London 3 SE. That season we were playing Park House, Whitstable, Folkestone, Bromley etc, great clubs with their own history and achievements, of course.

I asked what Darren’s goal for the club was and we discussed National league rugby. I said “Well let’s reach the top and look for National 1”

Some of our players and sponsors have been on board for a long time and have grown with the club, Hugo Watson, Mike O’Sullivan and Tom Nicoll to name just a few. Others were at the coal face in the early days, Jordan Finlayson Green, Carl Ambrose, Arthur Evans, John McMahon, Will Thorpe, Rhino (Jamie Stoor) and Toby Martin.

Together, with those and others both on and off the pitch, behind the scenes, on committees, running the shop, feeding the hordes, coaching and medical, kit men, and those supporters that have followed us all over the country, living the highs and lows with the team and last but not least our current squad of players and coaches and ever present manager Steve Farr, who have today, achieved promotion to The 3rd tier of English rugby. (National 1) where we join the likes of Blackheath, Rosslyn Park, Plymouth Albion, Old Elthamians, Darlington, and Birmingham and Mosley to name just a few.

I would personally like to thank everyone involved in the Club’s success. From our fantastic Mini and Junior teams which will provide the players of the future, to our National cup winning Academy and the ever improving and all conquering TJs Pink Ladies squad.

A great deal of gratitude is owed to all the sponsors over the years both large and small who, without their support, none of this would have been possible.

Today is a great day for the entire club. Let this help to bring a smile in times of stress and strains.

Stay safe everyone and boys do as much training as possible wherever you can.

We will post a round up of all the league Ups and Downs and final league standings shortly
