TJs Cling To Top Spot

7th March 2020

The wet weather had returned in the week to turn The Slade into a lake again so we upped sticks and headed to the drier confines of The Judd School Vizards 3G to take on Clifton in N2S R25. A tense and nervy final quarter ended with a win and maximum points to keep TJs top of the table, just.

TJs played with the wind in the first half and a bright start saw them score two early tries through Duncan Tout and Tom White who both cut superb lines from 25m out. Will Robinson converted one of them to give TJs a 12-0 lead after as many minutes

Clifton hit back with a penalty and then a converted try to narrow to 12-10 before the TJ forwards upped the pace and sent Will Colderick and skipper Mike O'Sullivan over in quick succession. Will Robinson and Tom White added the extras and TJs went into the break 26-10 up and the try bonus point secured.

More of the same followed as TJs set about securing the win with some excellent play in the third quarter. Tries from Hugo Watson and Duncan Tout again extended their lead to 36-10 and they seemed to be in control.

Clifton though set about tearing up the script and TJs helped with some lax defending that allowed the visitors to cross for four additional tries but crucially they were able to convert only one of them.

In the end TJs clung on, literally, to see out the final few minutes with the ball kept tight before being hoofed off. Tense to say the least but relief in the end as maximum points kept TJs top by 2 points from Taunton Titans although they have a game in hand.

Elsewhere a TJ senior XV headed to Warlingham and in heavy going slipped to a 28-17 defeat.

In N2S both Tauton and Henley kept their title challenges intact. Taunton came from behind to beat Dings 29-22 and with 4 tries secured maximum points. Henley Hawks saw off Esher 46-27 with 7 tries and they are 3 points behind TJs.

Redruth are still in the mix following a 22-41 win at Sutton & Epsom and they too have a game in hand. Bury St Edmunds beat Bournemouth 21-34, Old Albanians went down 10-16 to Westcliff, Leicester Lions edged our Old Reds 10-13 and Worthing beat Barnes 43-30.

That set of results and Westcliff's win especially means that the trap door is closing fast on Old Reds, Sutton & Epsom and Bournemouth.

However at the top there is still all to play for with Taunton at home to Esher and Redruth away to Leicester Lions next Saturday taking up the slack re their game in hand.

TJs have a Saturday off and return on the 21st March with a trip to Esher and a 3pm KO. The TJ train will be taking the strain if anyone would like to make the trip.

News from the Sunday games will follow later once known

And please don't forget that we have a very special Charity Game scheduled for the 14th March with a TJ All Stars XV taking on Weavering Warriors
