TJs Go Back to the Top

3rd November 2019

A packed TJ Clubhouse started the day in hope and expectation that the day would be a winning one on both on the world and local stages. Sadly England were stopped in their tracks by South Africa but TJs provided a better end to the day with a 9-12 win at Old Albanians.

A miserable, wet and windy day greeted TJs at the OAs/Saracens impressive facility and you knew the weather would be a levelller in an encounter TJs have generally had the upperhand in N2S.

OAs played down the slope and with the wind and rain at their backs in the first half. And any loose ball soon went aerial and 40ms downfield without too much effort. Keep ball was the only option but a greasy ball and chill made handling difficult for both sides.

OAs managed three penalties at goal to go in 9-0 up but it seemed a tad lacking and so it proved.

But it took some effort to first get to the OA line before forcing Will Colderick over to narrow the gap to 9-5. Will Robinson could not convert and TJs struggled to return the ball into the OA 22.

When they finally did the OA left wing dropped the kick just inside his own half and knocked on. An OA forward disagreed and TJs placed the penalty into the corner. From the catch, drive and phase play TJs crashed over but nobody was too sure if we had scored. The referee checked with his AR and they agreed that a try had been scored, Jimmy Green apparently, and Will converted to make it 9-12.

OAs still had their chances but when they got a penalty they went for the points and draw rather than the corner and a possible winning try. The kick did not carry and when they got another penalty they went to the corner and TJs snuffed it out to grab the win, four points and the top of the table spot again.
