TJs Off And Running

8th September 2019

TJs were out of the blocks quickly on Saturday in their N2S campaign as Leicester Lions arrived for Round 1 after being switched from N2N to South.

A new trip unfortunately led to a delayed arrival for the Lions but that didn't seem to effect them too greatly although TJs secured the try bonus point just before half time.

Will Robinson opened his account with a penalty and an astute kick deep into the Lions' 22m led to the field position that allowed Murray Galbraith-Lowe to power over and Robinson to add the extras. 10-0

Lions mixed things up but could not find a way through a solid TJ defence and an early penalty was missed badly left. Shortly afterwards they lost their hooker to the bin and TJs turned the screw another notch as Robinson dummied to open a hole through which he put Duncan Tout to score with the conversion added.

As TJs added more pace on the ball good handling between backs and forwards saw Hugo Watson in off his wing to score under the posts and Robinson inevitably converted. But he missed the extras for the fourth try, a well worked effort on the right again by Watson.

Lions hit back though just before the break with a rolling maul and went in 29-7 in arrears.

TJs made some changes at half time and the momentum remained and an errant kick out by Lions was fielded by the TJs back three who combined to send in Truman Sullivan for a try and Robinson duly converted.

Lions hit back again as the TJ defence got a little ragged and the play followed suit from both sides as neither could put much pattern or poise on the game. TJs did manage another score this time as Colderick made ground from No 8 before Touty found a gap on the right to plough over for his second. The final 20 minutes were notably uneventful but the job was done and maximum points secured

Next week TJs will be away to Sutton and Epsom, promoted to National 2 at the end of last season as champions from L&SE Premier. They lost 46-5 to Henley Hawks in their opening foray so will be aiming to bounce back in front of their home crowd no doubt.

Elsewhere in N2S there were big wins for Taunton and Old Albanians as they beat Bournemouth 49-12 and BSE 38-19 respectively. Redruth edged out Esher 10-8 and Clifton saw off Barnes, just, 34-31.

Westcliff went close too but a 24-25 reverse to Dings earned them 2 points whilst Worthing came from behind to beat Old Reds 27-20

On Sunday TJs Pink Ladies came from behind at half time to overpower Lewes 2s 38-15 at a very sunny Slade. A few photos from their game are available in their Gallery

The Academy Colts took on Old Rutts and came unstuck whilst teh U16s went down 10-20 to the same Club with Ben Moore and Jake Hardcastle scoring for TJs

And finally it is with great sadness that we learnt of the loss of ex TJ player Jon Ashdown earlier this week. Taken far too early and our thoughts are with Gemma, his wife, and family
