TJs Sign Pirate May

30th April 2018

After a sixth placed finish in their N2S debut season TJs have wasted no time in adding to their impressive squad ready for next season's campaign.

Local lad Toby May has signed from Championship side Cornish Pirates and will add even more cutting edge to the TJ back line.

Toby was born in 1989 and started his rugby life in Kent at Sevenoaks Prep School before attending Skinners. After playing youth rugby at Sevenoaks, Toby moved to Tunbridge Wells RFC before moving to Australia in 2008 for a year to play cricket. On his return he attended Bath University, where he progressed into the first team and also played twice for Bath United in the ‘A’ league. Also, whilst at Bath, he played for Westcombe Park and then for Kent in the top tier of the County Championship.

Toby taught PE at Skinners and did a teaching qualification at Cambridge University. He played in the 2013 and 2014 ‘Varsity’ matches and was also invited to play for the England Students Development squad.

In 2015 Toby joined the Cornish Pirates and in his first two complete seasons in Cornwall was all but an ever present at Full Back whilst also playing Centre when required. Toby won both the ‘Player of the Year’ and the ‘Players’ Player of the Year’ trophies in 2016. He signs off from The Pirates having played in 17 of their 2017/18 Greene King IPA Campaign where they should finish in the top five.

TJ Chairman Darren Grasby announced Toby's signing at the final league lunch of the season at The Slade and said 'Toby knows his way round the area and the rugby field and will bring even more excitement to our backline. His experience and quality will be a more than useful addition to a TJ squad who have impressed this season and who, with age on their side, have a chance to get even better. We are hoping we can keep a settled squad and with only Liam Prescott, our excellent fly half, announcing his retirement, we are already looking forward to next season, but may have a bit of a rest first!'
